Jake was planing wood for the spar of her boat when she heard a tentative knock on the shed door. For a brief, insane moment, she thought she’d open the door to find Susan standing on the other side.

Jake and her ex-lover hadn’t spoken in nearly a year, and it had been even longer since they’d seen each other, but Rita had told her today that Susan would be in town for the festival and was hoping they could get together. At the time, Jake had written it off as Rita’s attempt to play matchmaker. If Susan wanted to see her, she would have said so herself, and chances were it wouldn’t happen at three in the morning. Then the knock came and Jake realized she wasn’t quite so sure. About anything.

She pulled off her safety glasses, tossed them on her workbench, and opened the shed door. The glow from the fluorescent light overhead fell on the faces of Shy and a young woman who was as equally striking as Shy but whose beauty had a harder edge. Jake didn’t know whether to feel disappointed or relieved.

“When I rang the bell at the house and didn’t get an answer, I knew I’d find you in here,” Shy said brightly. “I’m not disturbing you, am I? I wanted to introduce you to someone.” She beckoned for her companion to move forward.

Jake wiped her hand on her jeans to make sure no wood shavings were stuck to her palm. “You must be Lucy.”

“A pleasure.” Lucy shook Jake’s hand limply as she directed a question toward Shy. “What did you tell her about me?”

Shy looked stricken by the question so Jake answered for her.

“Just that she was looking forward to your visit and couldn’t wait to spend time with you. Did you two have fun tonight?” she asked as she tried to get a handle on the vibe between them.

Shy and Lucy shared a look as if one was pleading with the other to be tactful.

“Shy took me to the Watering Hole,” Lucy said at length. “Tomorrow, we’re supposed to do some sightseeing and have dinner at a place called DiMillo’s.”

Jake nodded appreciatively. DiMillo’s was a sixty-year-old family-owned restaurant located near the marina. People came for the novelty of eating in a floating restaurant that offered incredible views of Portland Harbor. They stayed because DiMillo’s served some of the freshest seafood on the waterfront. The food was good, but it wasn’t cheap. Unless you went early enough to order one of the dinner specials, a meal for two could cost you three figures, easy.

Shy must really want to make a favorable impression, Jake thought. DiMillo’s was the kind of place you went to celebrate a special occasion or make new memories you hoped would eventually be remembered as one. It was the place where she had once planned to ask Susan to marry her. But that was before the future they had planned became a thing of the past.

“Do you have any recommendations?” Shy asked.
